Key Takeaways:

  • Every job is an opportunity: Someone out there needs your skills. Alison’s job at Nelson Dining Hall led her to start a marketing campaign for Nelson.
  • Listen hard: Absorb information in the chances you get. Listen to mentors and watch coworkers’ conversations. Listen for the story when you write rather than coming in with a set idea.
  • Make connections: Consider everyone, even unexpected people. A stranger at the gym can lead you to get an interview.
  • Lead with your strengths: Though all your skills may not apply to every job, leading with your strengths and passions can make you stand out.
  • Develop a well-rounded skill set: For public relations and corporate communications, writing, social media, graphic design, video/audio editing and content management are beneficial.
