The Internhips:
Bella – Blue Coats Drum and Bugle
Bella got her internship from a school assignment. She worked with the Blue Coat’s press release writer for who later reached out with the opportunity. Bella worked on copywriting, press releases and writing for websites. She also took photos at events and learned how to pitch stories; one of her pitches even reached the New York Times. She worked in Canton, her hometown, and found the busy media outlets challenging at first. A collaborative team helped her adjust. Bella recommends being proactive and using the language found on a company’s website when applying.
Isabel – Callen
Isabel landed her internship at Callen, an ad agency with clients such as Disney Plus, Netflix and Carl’s Jr. Her professor, Craig Davis, asked her to apply for the Stickell Fellowship. After writing an essay and a two-month interview process with several places, she earned her position. Isabel worked on project management, attended client meetings and met with the creative team. While in Texas for three months, she stayed in college dorms in Austin. Even though she sometimes led team members older than her, support from her boss helped her build trust quickly. Isabel says research and genuine questions during interviews make a strong impression.
Avery – AquaTech International
Avery found her internship during her junior year by spotting an opening in January. After a few rounds of interviews, she earned her role at AquaTech International—a water management company that later offered her a full-time position. Avery worked on social media management, writing blogs, assisting in meetings and preparing materials for trade shows. Her tasks also included writing case studies and project profiles. Avery worked in person near her hometown, a 45-minute commute that sometimes tested her stamina. She suggests doing in-person interviews, getting to know your manager on LinkedIn and trying your best to build connections with your coworkers.
Anna – Brightfind + ReadyNorth
Anna secured her internship at a small, fully-remote agency in northeast Ohio by using her PRSSA connections. After participating in the professional mentorship program, her mentor introduced her to the agency. Even though there wasn’t an official internship posting, she interviewed and got the role. Anna worked with multiple clients, including a major northeast Ohio headstone manufacturer and a B2C large cosmetics brand worth $2.5 billion. She handled a wide range of tasks including copywriting, blogs, newsletters, social media posts and campaign briefs for influencers. She also did weekly reporting on industry insights. Anna took the time to research her clients and share ideas, which built the trust needed for success. Her advice is to stay genuine, ask questions and keep in touch with the people you meet.
