For our first meeting of the spring semester, we were visited by Ohio University and J-School alumna Jasmine Garcia (‘14). Jasmine, once a member of Scripps PRSSA and imPRessions, is now a Senior Account Manager at Snap Inc., more widely known as Snapchat. Jasmine said that her journey to Snapchat was not picture-perfect, but that it led her to exactly where she wanted to be. Since July 2017, Jasmine has chosen to stay loyal to Snapchat due to its values, prioritization of work-life balance and growth opportunities. Jasmine expanded our chapter’s knowledge of Snapchat’s reach, audience and atmosphere, which encourages its users to be their most authentic selves. At the end of her presentation, Jasmine guided chapter members through important advice she’s been given throughout her career journey, which is listed below.
Jasmine’s Advice:
- “Don’t be afraid to reach out to Bobcat Alumni for advice or to connect, BUT make it easy for them to say to a meeting.” – Jasmine explained that it’s always a good idea to reach out to fellow Bobcats, but to make sure that you have a game plan to make meetings viable.
- “When it comes to networking, quality over quantity.” – Jasmine advised to focus on networking with contacts who work in roles or in places you want to be in the future.
- “Do your research and use your resources.”
- “Apply for the job even if you don’t meet all the requirements.” – Jasmine said to not shy away from a role just because you don’t meet every requirement, because you still can always learn along the way.
- “Be self-sufficient and try before asking.”
- “People remember how you make them feel – be mindful of your reputation.” – Jasmine said that the way others remember you and how you treat them doesn’t just set you apart socially, but also in the professional world. Jasmine specifically emphasized that “you can be a good person and be good at your job.”
- “Comparison is the thief of joy.” – Jasmine advised us to always do what makes sense for our individual paths, not others.
- “Everything happens for a reason – rejection is redirection!”
