“Your Time Will Come” by Alec Charron

In my last blog, I reflected on my summer without a traditional internship. 

I won’t lie, I felt defeated while writing that blog. I was spending most of my time applying to fall/spring internships with little to no success. It seemed like my peers were having vast success, but where was mine? 

Nevertheless, I was determined to network as much as I could among professionals and continue attending Scripps PRSSA meetings to gain as much insight as possible. 

In a PRSSA meeting last semester, recent alumna Alyssa Murtagh, who works at Edelman, gave this slice of wisdom: “My biggest advice for college students and post-grads is to expect change in a way that you’ve never felt before. But with that change, you’ll also find growth, resilience and newfound trust in yourself and your abilities.” 

I found solace and relief in these words. She’s completely right: I am changing. And that change brings opportunities for growth. There is no need to compare yourself to others when you possess abilities that are unique to you. Use these abilities to stand out in the industry and, above all, learn to trust in yourself. 

The world of public relations is also drastically changing. PR practitioners are finding new, innovative ways to connect with various audiences, even in uncertain times. As PR professionals, it’s our job to not only adapt to the situation around us, but learn how to use it to our advantage. Yes, we are living in a different, mostly virtual world, but we can still leverage our connections and improve ourselves. Knowing how to listen and adapt is crucial—especially now.

In my last blog, I ended with “What did I learn from all of this?” To answer that question now, I learned that your time will come. 

Just because you don’t find success right away doesn’t mean you are out of options. Your time will come, and you will find the right opportunities. Take the time to grow, improve your skills and focus on yourself and success will follow.
