This week, our chapter spoke with Ohio University alumna and past chapter member, Tessa Schoessel. During her time at OU, Tessa was in the CIAO Italian-American Club and was involved in PRSSA. She graduated in 2026 with a Bachelor of Science in Communication studies and minors in Marketing and Fashion Merchandising.
Today, Tessa works as a Marketing Specialist at Land-Grant Brewing Company based in Columbus, Ohio. Land Grant is a Columbus based craft brewery in Franklinton. It is a community focused brand that is centered around beer. During her presentation, Tessa gave us an overview of what she does now and gave some future advice to our chapter members.
What does she do now?
During her presentation, Tessa shared some of the many things that she is responsible for in her role at Land Grant:
- In charge of all content ideas
- Develops concepts for socials
- Builds monthly/weekly content plans
- Plans content around beer releases, events and trends
- Brainstorms names for new and experimental beers
- Develop names based on flavor, style and brand personality
She also spoke about the importance of community engagement. Being able to respond to comments, engage with followers and local accounts and manage social conversations around events and releases shows vendor relations and engagement.
What is some advice for our chapter members?
- Try everything: “I started an internship with the Shelly company the summer before my senior year. Learned about asphalt, material sales and how to market construction. You learn what you like through your internships!”
- There is a reason you are the youngest in the room: “Never feel dumb in an internship/post-grad, there’s a reason you’re the youngest in the room.”
- Don’t let the toxic managers define you
- Your first job will not be your last: In order to grow professionally and personally, you’ll need to try new things
- Post-grad does not equal immediate success: Don’t compare yourself to your friends and classmates
- Rejection really is just redirection, it’s not just you sometimes it really is the job market!
