A PeRfect Match | The Peer Mentor/Mentee Program!

You’ll hear it time and time again as you begin your career in this industry- find a mentor. Well, I just so happen to be lucky enough that Scripps PRSSA found them for me.

The Peer Mentor/Mentee program is what I consider to be one of the best parts of our organization, simply because you have a chance to learn from those who were once in your shoes as an underclassmen and pass on what you’ve learned, once you’re ready, to be a mentor. Sometimes it’s nice to just be able to have someone who’s going through it with you and understand the way you’re feeling.

I was lucky enough to be paired with Jennica Lurie and Sadie Newman, the greatest mentors ever (sorry, I may be biased). They were able to help me out with a lot of the things your average PR newbie might not know, like what you do/don’t need on a resume, interview tips, etc. But, they also gave me some super simple and straight-up advice, such as to work hard but have fun as much as you can, and to never take yourself too seriously. They are two of the most genuine people I have ever met, and I constantly look up to them for not only their guidance, but the way they are unapologetically true to themselves.

What’s great about mentors and mentees is that it’s not about who knows more about the industry or who’s had the most experience. It’s about learning and growth on both sides. It’s important to have someone you can ask questions to and go to for moments you might feel stuck or confused. I know that without Sadie and Jennica, I would not be the professional I am today or know all that I do. But, it’s also important to learn about what kind of leader you are and what you can do to help someone grow and develop, and I think that’s a great part of being a mentor.

So whatever role you take, don’t be afraid of all you have yet to learn. This year is the first time I am taking on the mentor role, and I am so excited to meet my first mentee! I can’t wait to drink too much coffee together and (hopefully) give them some PR wisdom. Because as this program will show you, there is nothing better than finding a perfect PR pal.
