Scripps PRSSA 101: Your Guide to a Great Year

Hey Scripps PRSSA – welcome hOUme!

I hope your summer was filled with relaxation, good times, and even better Instagram photos. Many of you held internships this summer and worked summer jobs. Some studied abroad. Others used this summer as an opportunity to reset for the busy semester ahead. Or, maybe you’re an incoming freshman and you spent this summer freaking out about college life. OR, even worse, maybe you’re an incoming SENIOR and you spent the summer freaking out about the fact that this is your last year of college life. Either way, I encourage you to take a deep breath and get excited for this school year because dare I say… it’s gonna be a good one.

Consider this your guide to everything PRSSA-related. Here is what you need to know for the year ahead:

PRSSA who?

In case you didn’t know, Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is the leading organization for students interested in public relations and communications. The organization’s mission is to provide exceptional service to members by enhancing their education, broadening their professional network and helping launch their careers after graduation.

For more information, visit PRSSA National’s official website here.

Weekly Meetings

Join us every Monday at 6 p.m. in Tupper 304! Each week, our Chapter hosts weekly meetings where we invite a professional in the field to speak to us. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about what they do and their Company, as well as ask them any questions you may have. Just to mix things up a bit, we sometimes do panels and interactive workshops during Monday meetings as well.

For a chance to network further with our speakers, join us for dinner each week after our meeting! This is your opportunity to introduce yourself and create a lasting impression. You never know when your paths might cross again in the future!

Immerse Yourself

Weekly meetings just aren’t enough? If that’s the case, you are in luck! Our Chapter is proud of the many opportunities we offer members who are passionate about going the extra mile. Here are some ways you can get involved on a deeper level:

PR Bootcamp – This is a workshop we host each semester to strengthen our personal branding and PR skills. Lessons in the past have included resume building, creating a LinkedIn profile, writing press releases, and more! Details will be announced later in the semester, so be on the lookout!

Writing Opportunities – Take advantage of this! Writing will never go out of style which is why it’s important that you’re good at it. If you’re interested in writing for Scripps PRSSA, start by writing a blog for our Chapter’s website. If you want to take things to the next level, apply to write for our semesterly newsletter, PR Success. Please reach out to me if you’re interested.

Committees – Committees consist, on average, of about 5-10 members who meet every other week to discuss ways we can improve our Chapter in various areas.

  • Publicity Committee (PR, blog writing, social media, graphic design, etc.)

Contact: Sydney Davis, Vivian Moussa, Jakob Warren

  • Special Events Committee (event planning)

Contact: Kate Ryan, Hannah Schuller

  • Diversity and Inclusion Committee

Contact: Sierra Heilman, Katherine Keber

Mentorship Program – Mentorship is our way of giving members the emotional and instrumental support they need throughout their college career. Not gonna lie – college is stressful! As a part of our mentorship program, we offer two types of mentors: student and professional.

Student mentors are our version of Greek life’s big/little system. They’re there to help you determine career aspirations, and work with you to achieve them. Or, just be there as a friend.

Professional mentors, many of which are PRSSA alumni, are well-known and respected in their field and community. They can offer you real world advice and connect you with other professionals, internships and jobs.

Networking Trips – Scripps PRSSA networking trips are unlike anything else you’ll experience in college. PRSSA International Conference is our largest networking trip. It allows members to network and explore both the new and the traditional methods of public relations. We’ve traveled as a group to exciting cities such as Chicago and Austin, and this year we’ll be attending Conference in San Diego! Each year, we also do smaller trips to cities such as Columbus and Pittsburgh. Stay tuned for details throughout the year!

Socials – Yeah, sure, networking is great and all, but we want you to have fun too. Socials give members the chance to hangout outside of meetings, so they can get to know each other on a more personal level. Ask anyone in our Chapter, and they’ll tell you they’ve made some of their very best friends in this organization! Interested in the planning process? Join the Special Events Committee!

Date Parties – Last semester, we held our very first date party! It was a huge success and it’s something we want to continue doing. Our VP of Social Affairs, Kate Ryan, is in the process of coordinating not one, but TWO date parties for this year. Interested in the planning process? Again, join the Special Events Committee!

Executive Board – Scripps PRSSA’s Executive Board is made up of nine members. Each of them has unique responsibilities and play a crucial role in the success of our Chapter. Are you interested in being a member of Executive Board in the future? If so, go for it! This is a great way to gain leadership experience. You can find more information on each position and the election process here.

If you have any questions about PRSSA, please feel free to reach out to myself or another member of our Executive Board. We are happy to answer any questions you may have! Here’s to an incredible year, bobcats!

Sydney Davis is a senior majoring in strategic communication and the current VP of Public Relations for Scripps PRSSA.
