Well, here I go. I’m going to answer the question for which I can truly write a novel right now. I don’t know how I’ll ever sum this one up — there’s a lot to unpack.
This is why I love PR.
Stories and people. Those are my life passions. I wanted to incorporate those components into some aspect of my career. So, I waltzed into my first PRSSA meeting freshman year and instantly knew that it was for me.
Here are the three reasons why I personally believe this field is special:
Creativity
In the PR field, you’re constantly moving. You create campaigns and develop projects for a brand that you represent. You are given the freedom (within reason) to create projects that will benefit your brand. There are so many things to learn and explore, such as programs that you can use to boost your skills, such as Canva, Microsoft Excel and Adobe InDesign. You create campaigns that involve events, social media, media relations and more. There’s never time to be bored!
Opportunity
This field is so relevant. No matter what path you take in this career, you are needed. Everyone needs a PR pro to make the operation run smoothly — from healthcare to entertainment and every industry in between. That need will never go away because companies need a voice and accountability to continue to thrive. Plus, the perspective you bring boosts brand awareness, which is essential to a successful brand. You can work for an agency with a variety of clients. You can also work for a corporate company and have their mission be your main focus. Public relations is not just a one dimensional profession — there are always more opportunities to be found.
Collaboration
Teamwork truly does make the dream work. Sure, independence is key as well but this career path is all about collaborating with others, such as co-workers in order to complete projects to the best of your ability. You can collaborate on a variety of projects with professionals that focus on internal communication, digital marketing or whatever you find your specialty to be.
There aren’t many limits to the public relations industry, so I hope you know that you can do whatever you put your mind to and find something that you love in this field. I know I have.
