“Lessons from your Chapter President” By Vivian Moussa

Being on Scripps PRSSA’s executive board for two years, I’ve learned a lot about being successful in a leadership role, while also being a full-time student. Below are some tips and tricks I’ve learned throughout my time as chapter president.

  1. Don’t make yourself available 24/7

When you love an organization as much as I love Scripps PRSSA, it’s natural to become overly invested in what you do. Late nights in Schoonover, multiple meetings a day and countless cups of Donkey coffee are some best memories being involved in an organization. However, it’s important to take time for yourself and remember it’s ok to not be on call all the time and to step away from your phone and computer.

  1. Delegate tasks

Leading all meetings and projects, the workload can be overwhelming at times. Now more than ever, lean on your peers. Don’t be afraid to delegate tasks and ask for help when you need it! You don’t have to do everything all the time.

  1. Find a balance between work and friends

Working with your friends can lead to some of your best college memories because you get to spend time together. However, it can also sometimes lead to uncomfortable conversations when you are in an authoritative position and have to discipline members for not doing what is asked. Make sure to create boundaries and have transparent relationships with your friends.

  1. Always stay organized

It might sound cliche, but keeping all your affairs in order is crucial for success. Having a color coordinated planner and multiple notebooks to write down daily to do’s has been extremely helpful for me! It’s vital to be organized to ensure you keep your team organized as well!

  1. Have fun, enjoy your time

Between the stress and long hours, don’t forget to have fun along the way! These are some of the best years of your life and you should enjoy every minute of it. Life is too short and before you know it you will be starting the next phase of your life. So, don’t get caught up in the little things, and enjoy your time!

There are many lessons I could share from what I’ve learned as my time as Chapter president. My biggest advice is to just stay focused on your goals and enjoy every minute of your time at Ohio University — four years goes quick!
