How to maintain a healthy lifestyle while on the job

By Michelle Reinold

healthy life Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while working can be on of the hardest things to do. You’re constantly busy and have absolutely no time to worry about how many calories are in whatever you can throw together at short notice. The most convenient thing you can do is drive to the McDonalds down the street and grab something, but that is also the most unhealthy option.

There are many ways to try to maintain a healthy lifestyle when entering the professional world. Some of the ways I find the easiest are preparing your meals a night in advance so there’s no rush in the morning. Bringing your own breakfast, lunch or dinners to work will save you a lot of money.

Also, you may not have time to work out as much as you would like, but you would be surprised at how many small things you can do to help. I know we all look for the closest parking spot next to the store when shopping, but next time try to park far away. You’d be surprised how much those few extra steps can do in the future. Or if you’re in a rush when you’re shopping, you could always pack some tennis shoes and walk around the block on your lunch break.

Something else I try to do is eat as much as I can throughout the day. Go ahead and have an apple while working before lunch time. This will help you stay full so you can focus on your work while keeping your metabolism high!

There are many ways to stay active while becoming a professional, and not all of them involve hitting the him when you’re tired from a long day. So have fun with it and always remember to plan ahead!

“I love being stressed!” said nobody, ever.

ImageOne of the best things about Ohio University is the endless opportunities our school provides. I know I’m speaking for everyone when I say that it’s very easy to get involved here. Unfortunately, all the opportunities, along with schoolwork and a job, can lead to a lot of stress in your life. The good news is that there are concrete ways to eliminate stress and enjoy the warm weather that is (hopefully) on its way.

  1. Just breathe

First and foremost, remember to breathe. Nothing is actually as bad as it may seem in the moment. Sitting around and stressing is only going to make matters worse, so just breathe. Stressing too much can lead to a lack of sleep, which will increasingly lower your ability to properly perform in class, work or extracurricular activities. Exhale all of the bad energy and inhale the positive and continually remind yourself that your problems today will be gone tomorrow.

  1. Prioritize

I know it’s hard, but sometimes the work for that class you really don’t like needs to come first. Don’t spend all of your time doing work that can wait. Finish your work in order of importance, that way you are not scrambling at the end to finish something that is due the next morning. Once you’ve mastered prioritization, it will become a lot easier to start tasks ahead of time, eliminating last-minute work.

  1. Stay organized

Whether it’s making a to-do list, carrying a planner with you, keeping your calendar updated, or your own organizational trick, it is vital to stay organized. If you can’t remember what meeting you have next or what assignment you have due tomorrow, how will you ever stay on top of your work? Leading an unorganized life is just asking for stress. That doesn’t mean that without a color-coded life plan you’ll never be successful, but a simple organizational trick like a to-do list is very important. By staying organized, you will always be on top of your work.

  1. Enough is enough

You have to know when to say “no”. It’s so easy to continue taking on too many responsibilities without realizing that it’s not going to be feasible to do everything. When you’re too busy, it’s ok to say no to the next opportunity that comes along. During my experience, I’ve learned that quality is better that quantity. It’s better to give a few things your best effort than to give a lot of things a little bit of effort. At the end of the day, you will gain more experience by diving deeper into your classes and a few of your favorite organizations.

When you’re stress levels have reached the max, just keep in mind that there will always be another day full of sunshine and opportunity. Your stress will be gone in no time, and you’ll be back to feeling at ease before you know it. Just keep your chin up and remember that you’re a Bobcat, and this stress won’t last forever.

How to keep your professional life and personal life in perfect balance

By Kelsey Miller

College is hard, especially if you’re a Scripps kid. Adding a relationship into the mix? Now, that seems impossible. But believe it or not, there is hope for all journalism majors at Ohio University. It just takes a little getting used to and some organized skill. Just follow these steps and you and your relationship will be golden, guaranteed:

Decide if the relationship is even worth it. Is this someone who you’ve been pining after for ages? Love at first sight, perhaps? Or is this someone that caught your attention on a typical night out with your friends? Will this person hold you back from your dreams of becoming successful in public relations? By answering these questions honestly, you will save yourself a lot of time, stress and effort in the long run.

Stay organized. So, you have decided that this person is worth it, eh? OK, let the work begin! As well as keeping the relationship with your significant other, you will have to keep an equally strong bond with a planner. This is actually your first baby, congratulations! This planner will be with you at all times to keep you on track and focused. That way, you will have no problems visually seeing when you can pencil your boo in for some face time in person or just a few minutes of FaceTime on your iPhones.

Don’t get overly involved. Scripps kids are known for their overwhelming schedules. Don’t forget that quality over quantity is still very helpful logic to live by. It’s extremely important to be involved, but when you go overboard on all of your meetings and organizations, you’ll spread yourself too thin and become resentful of Scripps and everyone around you, including your other half. The point in a relationship is to enjoy one another’s company. That’s hard to do if you don’t have time and are stressed and always grouchy. College is supposed to be about surrounding yourself with people you love, and doing what you love. So, do yourself a favor and just enjoy the ride. You’re a Scripps kid; you WILL succeed.

Stay in contact frequently. It is important to always be on the same page as your girlfriend/boyfriend. Whether that’s a text message asking how their day is going, or just a quick goodnight call. And even though you have so much cool stuff going on with your life, be sure to ask about them, too! In long-distance situations, the time that you have with together is valuable and the last thing that you want to do is complain about how stressed you are. By asking about them, it gives you an escape from your busy life, and can lead to great conversations, even if it’s just a 10-minute phone call. Not to mention, asking about someone else is a guaranteed way to maintain a long and healthy relationship with anyone!

Spoil your man/woman! It is crucial that your relationship is give and take. Don’t be old school and think that only one party is supposed to treat the other. If you aren’t looking to spend any money, complimenting his or her inner and outer beauty frequently goes a LONG way. They will not only stick around, but they will appreciate everything you do and will reciprocate in many ways.

Make sure to not let the relationship interfere with your college experience. College is a major time in your life that you’ll never get back and it is important to be selfish in some situations. Although a solid relationship is fun to have and maintain, it can also hold you back from making friends or joining clubs that you were always interested in. Before you can be the other half of someone else’s life, you need to figure out who you are. If he or she wants to be with you, they won’t hold you back from fulfilling your dreams.

It’s all about balance. Once you find it, it will be bliss. As I said earlier, enjoy the ride ladies and gentlemen. It will all happen in good time.
